At present, the Welsh NHS is waiting for the full range devices using the ISO 80369-6 compliant connectors to be deployed in the UK. The WNCRG with NWSSP Procurement Services will be coordinating the implementation of the new devices.

  • As of June 2018, ISO have made a copy of the Usability report for the ISO 80369-6 (NRFit) connectors available to the public free of charge. (Alternative link)
  • Aneurin Bevan Health Board rolled out ISO 80368-6/NRFit kit for bolus injections in January 2018, and this now covers most of their hospitals. Epidurals are not NRFit yet as they are still waiting for their epidural pump supplier to launch NRFit compatible administration sets.
  • All other health boards in Wales are still using Luer as of June 2018, and most are waiting for their pump suppliers to launch NRFit administration sets. This probably means most Welsh Health Boards will not convert to NRFit until late 2018 or early 2019.

  • 2017-06-29 - Industry have been delayed with the introduction of these devices. We expect some devices by Aug 2017, but many will only be launched between Aug 2017 and Jan 2018. Some manufacturers are not launching in the UK until Summer 2018 (BD are known to be targeting Summer 2018).
  • 2017-03-28 - New surveillance training materials available on the PHW web site. (2017-03-28).
  • March 2017 - the neuraxial Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is now available.
  • Jan 2017 - We are still anticipating April 2017 as the month from when Industry will start deploying the devices but we are already aware that there will be delays. The Dec 2016 supplier update is available.
    • BD won't be ready until late 2018
    • We have two alternative syringe suppliers - BBraun and Intervene/GB UK - both are in the process of commissioning stability studies to enable aseptic dispensing of medicines by pharmacy departments, but we don't have definite dates for when validation will be finished.
    • Most other suppliers will either be ready by April or have shortish delays of a few months. For example, Smiths/Portex epidural kit ETA June-Aug 2017, Vygon pencil point needle ETA Sept 2017.
    • A draft FAQ has being produced which we hope to finalise in the coming weeks.
    • A HOWTO document, giving advice on how to manage the rollout of 80369-6 compatible connectors is available.
  • Oct 2016 - The UK is still targeting April 2017 as the date for introducing ISO 80369-6 compatible devices into the NHS. See OAA website and NHS England SBC group position statement (PDF) for further details. Note that to date, BD and Vygon have indicated that they will not be ready to meet the UK timescales.
  • April 2016 - The ISO standard for the new connectors has been published - BS EN ISO 80369-6 - “Small bore connectors for liquids and gases in healthcare applications. Connectors for neuraxial applications”
